E-Cigarette Sparked Fire That Displaced 19 In Carroll County Building: Official

An e-cigarette has been identified as the cause of a fire that ripped through a Carroll County apartment building.

An occupant of the Sykesville Apartments on Village Road woke up to a smoke alarm around 6:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, and discovered a fire in a separate bedroom, the state's fire marshal said. 

He tried to put out the fire with a pot of water before it grew beyond his control. Investigators found that an e-cigarette failed and ignited bedding material. 

The fire was knocked down by 35 firefighters in about 10 minutes.

The fire was contained to just one apartment however, 11 others sustained varying degrees of smoke, soot, water damage. A total of 19 people are temporarily displaced.
